Understanding Your Case Opening Performance

Why Track Your Case Openings?

Most players have a vague sense that they've "spent a lot" on cases without knowing exact figures. This tracker helps you understand your actual spending patterns, returns, and how your results compare to mathematical expectations. According to research on behavioral economics and gambling, accurate tracking is essential for making informed decisions about entertainment spending.

The tracker stores all data locally in your browser using localStorage, meaning your information never leaves your device. You can export and import your data for backup or transfer between devices.

Key Metrics Explained

Total Spent

The cumulative amount you've spent on cases and keys. Each CS2 case opening requires both the case itself and a key (approximately $2.50). This is the baseline cost before any returns.

Total Returns

The sum of market values for all items you've logged. To get accurate returns, add each drop with its current Steam Community Market value.

Net Profit/Loss

Returns minus Spent. A positive number means you've gained value; negative means loss. Most long-term case openers show negative figures, which is expected given CS2's negative expected value system.

Expected Value

Based on Valve's official drop rates and typical case economics, most cases have an expected return of 40-60% of the opening cost. This tracker estimates expected value based on the number of cases opened and typical ROI. For detailed methodology, see our Case ROI Calculator.

vs. Expected

How your actual returns compare to what probability suggests. Running "above expected" means you've been statistically lucky; "below expected" suggests the opposite. Neither indicates future results - each case opening is independent.

How to Use This Tracker Effectively

1. Log Every Session

For accurate tracking, log each case opening session immediately after playing. Include the case type, number opened, and your cost. Consistency in logging produces the most useful data.

2. Record Item Values

After logging a session, add each item you received with its current market value. For accurate pricing, check the Steam Community Market or third-party sites like CSGOFloat or Buff163. Remember that the market takes a percentage on sales.

3. Review Periodically

Check your dashboard weekly or monthly to understand your overall performance. Are you spending more than intended? Are returns meeting expectations? This data helps inform future decisions.

4. Set Limits Based on Data

Use your tracked spending to set realistic budgets. If you've spent $500 with $200 in returns, you know case opening costs you roughly $300 for entertainment. Is that value appropriate for your entertainment budget?

Understanding Variance

Short-term case opening results vary dramatically from expectations. You might open 50 cases and get lucky, or open 200 and never see a rare drop. The tracker helps visualize this variance by comparing your actual results to expected values over time.

According to the law of large numbers, results converge toward expected values only over very large sample sizes. For CS2 cases, meaningful statistical patterns require hundreds or thousands of openings. Even then, individual outcomes remain unpredictable.

Data Privacy

This tracker operates entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server. Your case opening history, spending figures, and items remain completely private. You can export your data as JSON for backup, or clear all data at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data stored securely?

Yes. All data is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. Nothing is sent to any server. Your case opening history remains completely private on your device.

What happens if I clear my browser data?

Clearing browser data or localStorage will delete your tracked sessions. We recommend using the Export feature to regularly backup your data as a JSON file. You can import this file to restore your tracking history.

How do I calculate item values?

For the most accurate tracking, check current market prices on the Steam Community Market or third-party sites. Enter the value you could realistically sell the item for, accounting for market fees if you plan to liquidate.

Why does my ROI differ from the ROI Calculator?

The ROI Calculator shows expected (theoretical) returns based on average market values and probabilities. Your actual ROI depends on which specific items you receive and their current market prices. Variance means actual results will differ from theoretical expectations.

Can I track cases opened on third-party sites?

This tracker is designed for official CS2 case openings through Steam. Third-party case opening sites have different probabilities and economics that wouldn't produce comparable data.

How is Expected Value calculated?

Expected Value is estimated based on typical CS2 case economics - most cases return approximately 40-60% of opening cost on average. For precise expected value of specific cases with current market prices, use our ROI Calculator.

Important Notice: CS2 case opening involves real money with negative expected value. Most players lose money over time. Track your spending to stay within your entertainment budget.
